What Do We Really Want for Karuna Bali?

Hi Dear Friends,

I awoke this morning with a question being asked of me -

What is it that you truly want?

I realised that Karuna Bali had been on my mind and that the time has come for us to have a look at our heart's desire for this beautiful child we have birthed together and what aspirations, hopes and desires we have for our child's growth into maturity.

We have before us a completely empty page, one that we can fill with our joy and blessing and all that is required is choose the path we want to follow and let it unfold as it has so successfully up till now.

So, here is the challenge - "What do we truly want for Karuna Bali?" or "How can we serve best?"

The Rules:

There is all the time in the world - the pace at which the desire is realised is not our decision.

The only limitation is our ability to open our hearts and minds.

There is all the funding available that we could ever use.

So, what is it that we truly want?

Our original focus was on service through providing education in English language and Computers and we birthed Campuhan College. In just one year we have realised this goal with over one hundred children, students directly benefiting from the vision. Now as we move forward new opportunities have led to the exciting extension of high school graduates joining the management and leadership scholarship program. Already the first students are taking responsibility not only for their own education but also for the management of activities within the College and Karuna Bali projects.

Next stage: the creation of in-house management teams formed from our management students to research, evaluate and create the operational structure for new external projects.

The unique aspect of Karuna Bali – “Compassion Bali” the new name for the legalised and recognised Indonesian Non Government Organisation (NGO) lies in the ability to use the student base for administrative and management support for the various projects.

As such the very responsibility given to each student becomes in itself the unique training that the College offers, encouraging responsibility, accountability and imagination.

Each student is offered the opportunity to learn, experience and grow in a way that no other education program can offer.

Similar to a Catering School that teaches cooking, table waiting, menu building, food ordering and through offering a restaurant to the public, the students are required to put into practice their learning, so too do the Karuna Bali projects both within the College and in other areas yet to come provide an immediate practical application for the new found skills in English language communication, computer program skills, and most importantly provide the opportunity for the development of the students own abilities through being required to input their own ideas, intuition, and creativity.

This is where our leadership training starts - right at the very beginning.

As we begin right now to allow responsibility for all aspects of our 'operation' to be part of the student education program we are unique and we will naturally extend our own abilities and our own momentum....the ground has already been broken through the Trainee Management students that started assisting in the office in July. Now they are demonstrating ability to assume responsibility through the management of outreach activities through the English Club, the Film Nights and the local Orphanage support program.

This requirement for assuming responsibility will become the focus for students at all levels participating in the College. Obviously the extent of responsibility will vary from student to student and from age to age, to the amount of time in the College but the overriding principle of Karuna Bali is that the growth for Karuna Bali comes from the bottom up not the top down, from within not without. Just like a flower growing and blooming.

Our function as Karuna Bali has the potential to go way beyond ‘teaching’ the students - they are with us to experience and open to the flowering of their own hearts desire, their passion, their infectious enthusiasm, their unlimited energy and their natural creativity to be of use and service in the world - before the 'world' ensnares them with it's mind set of 'getting', Karuna Bali shows a new way - through 'giving' that all things will come to them.

One of our greatest opportunities in Karuna Bali is to be a living demonstration of how teaching institutions and business organizations can be run differently.

We are gradually instilling a new way of doing things in every aspect of the Karuna Bali operation - from where we are today with simple things like moving chairs and photocopying, managing the library, the English club, film nights, familiarization talks for new students, enrolment, student folders, promotion and brochure distribution, flower arrangements and offerings, group discussions, shopping,....through to the planning of new Karuna Bali projects, organisation and individual project development. All these being managed under supervision by the students either on an individual or team basis.

In addition, students are being appointed as assistants in the management areas (using the senior students - the Trainees) at all levels - bookkeeping, banking, marketing, product development.

Students are to be available during their school curriculum period for their project management and, if required and as available, out of school time with a nominal payment made to demonstrate value and appreciation.

DELEGATION, ALLOWANCE, WILLINGNESS, AVAILABILITY, ACCOUNTABILITY... these are the qualities which will be embraced at all levels from the students to teachers and the management and directors.

So to take this further.....

1. We have now structurally separated the College from Karuna Bali so that it is a stand alone operation.

The College is the birthing place of our talent and future staff, management teams - it becomes the key point from which all things are made possible to bring into manifestation. Already we are at capacity and are reviewing for 2008…

  • Students - the optimum number of each level.

  • How many teachers do we need.

  • What ex-pat expertise we want to attract.

  • How many classrooms we need. We remain committed to a maximum of 10 students per class to maintain quality.

  • Other infrastructure, management and administration that is required.
